12 Linear Feet (The O'Brien Collection consists of five series: PA Supreme Court Journals, Personal Items, Irish Studies, Duquesne University Awards, and Audiovisual. The collections span from 1950-1991, with the bulk of the materials from 1956-1986. Materials in the collection range from leather-bound case journals from O'Brien's service as a Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice, papers and articles relating to O'Brien's Irish American heritage, and personal items and keepsakes collected by O'Brien throughout his life. The collection also contains several citations awarded to O'Brien by Duquesne University. Several audiovisual records relate to O'Brien's efforts to be elected to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court on the Republican ticket in the late 1950s and a television interview form September 1980. The collection is particularly strong in the documenting O'Brien's tenure on Pennsylvania's highest judicial body. Nineteen leather-bound journals, containing handwritten notes, document O'Brien's terms as a Pennsylvania Supreme Court justice (1962-1980) and chief justice (1980-1983). Two case journals, however, from 1976 and 1978 are absent from the collection. A wide range of personal items O'Brien accumulated throughout his life are also contained in the collection. O'Brien's papers and personal effects contain very little in the way of personal correspondence or photographs relating to his personal life. The Justice Henry X. O'Brien Collection, consisting of 12 linear feet of materials, is contained in eleven acid-free boxes of assorted sizes. )
